Before embarking on our Alaska cruise, we gave ourselves the gift of time—three days in Seattle, Washington. It was just right. Enough to savor the city’s iconic sights, indulge in its culinary treasures, and ease into the rhythm of travel before heading into the wild north.

🧀 Pike Place Market: A Feast for the Senses
We began where all great Seattle stories do—at Pike Place Market. The air was thick with the scent of fresh seafood, warm pastries, and aged cheeses. We tasted our way through the stalls: creamy bites from Beecher’s Handmade Cheese, sweet indulgences from local bakeries, and oysters so fresh they practically whispered tales of Puget Sound. It was a sensory immersion, and the perfect way to feel the pulse of the city.

🏙️ Space Needle: Cinematic Views and Skyline Romance
No visit to Seattle is complete without ascending the Space Needle. Familiar from countless films, it still managed to surprise us. The panoramic views stretched from the glittering cityscape to the distant silhouette of Mount Rainier. It was a moment of quiet awe—one of those rare travel pauses where you simply breathe and take it all in.
🚈 Getting Around: The Link Light Rail
Seattle’s metro system—officially the Link Light Rail—was our trusty companion. Sleek, efficient, and surprisingly scenic, it whisked us between neighborhoods with ease. For visitors like us, it was a seamless way to explore without the hassle of parking or navigation.
🔮 Chihuly Garden and Glass: A Pacific Northwest Echo of Murano
Having wandered the glassblowing studios of Murano, Italy, we weren’t sure anything could rival its artistry. But Chihuly Garden and Glass offered a distinctly Pacific Northwest take on that same magic. Inside, vibrant glass sculptures twisted and bloomed in surreal forms, suspended like frozen fireworks or nestled like sea creatures in a dreamscape. We watched a live glassblowing demonstration—familiar yet fresh—where molten glass danced into shape before our eyes. Outside, the garden installations shimmered in the sunlight, each piece a bold conversation between nature and imagination. It was a beautiful reminder that wonder travels well—and sometimes, it finds you again in unexpected places.
🌊 Waterfront Wandering: A DIY Food Tour (and a Spin in the Sky)

One afternoon, we let our appetites lead the way along Seattle’s scenic waterfront. No reservations, no rules—just a spontaneous, self-guided tasting adventure. We nibbled on crab cakes, sipped craft cocktails, and couldn’t resist a perfectly chilled shrimp cocktail that tasted like the ocean itself. Each stop offered a new flavor and a new view, from cozy seafood shacks to sleek harbor front lounges.
And because why not—we hopped aboard the Seattle Great Wheel for a quick spin. Suspended over Elliott Bay, the views were spectacular and the vibe pure vacation. It was a playful, impromptu moment that added just the right touch of whimsy to our food-forward afternoon.
🎸 Museums That Rock
We dove into pop culture at MoPOP—the Museum of Pop Culture—where movie memorabilia and rock star relics sparked nostalgia and delight. One of the highlights was a special exhibit on the creators of Coraline and other stop-motion films. It was surprisingly captivating to see the intricate characters, their tiny outfits, and the meticulously crafted sets up close. The artistry and patience behind each frame were awe-inspiring—a true testament to the magic of storytelling through miniature worlds.
🏔️ Rainier from Afar, Sunshine Up Close
Though we didn’t venture into the wilderness, nature still found us. Mount Rainier loomed in the distance, majestic and serene. The weather was crisp and golden—perfect for sweaters and light jackets. Seattle gifted us sunshine, and we soaked it in.

🧗♀️ Hills and Heartbeats
Coming from flatter terrain, Seattle’s hills were a surprise—and a workout. But every climb led to a new view, a hidden café, or a quiet moment. The city’s topography added texture to our experience, reminding us that beauty often lies just beyond the next incline.
🌟 Why We Stayed in the City
While many travelers escape Seattle for nearby nature, we chose to stay put. With days of outdoor adventure ahead on our Alaska cruise, these three days were about urban exploration, cultural immersion, and indulgent ease. It was the perfect counterbalance to what lay ahead.

Seattle welcomed us with open arms and a full table. It was a city of flavor, art, and cinematic charm—a fitting overture to the grandeur of Alaska. For anyone planning a cruise, we wholeheartedly recommend arriving early. Let the city set the tone. Let it surprise you.
